Yesterday I saw the One Question Interview posted on Problogger which asked “What one thing did you do on your blog in 2007 that improved it the most?” It got me thinking a bit about the subject and I thought it might be worthwhile to share my thoughts with you and perhaps provide some motivation for your own blog projects as we approach the beginning of 2008.

Answer 1: Starting this blog was the most important improvement I made this year.
I had started a number of blog projects during this year and then let them go after only a couple of weeks of postings. I started one about investing in the stock market, and one about green living all before establishing sitecash.info. The investing blog was fun for me as it once again got me thinking about the stock market. Then there was the green living blog which I admittedly didn’t know enough about to keep producing valuable content. Both of those were built and maintained on Blogger (this will be important for my second answer).
There was a lot of hesitation on my part because sitecash.info was yet another blog project that I wasn’t sure i would stick with. After the short month and a half that I’ve been setting this up and writing, I realize that I’m really excited about the topics I cover and I have a lot to contribute to the discussion.
The take away
The saying ‘you can do anything you set your mind to’ is true. However when you have passion and a solid background it makes it easier and makes you and your mission more compelling.
Answer 2: Leaving Blogger and Starting Sitecash.info on the Wordpress Platform.
This was really a wonderful change for me. As I said earlier, the two blog projects I started earlier in the year were run on Blogger. Sure Blogger was easy to use but Wordpress gives me a ton of flexibility and a vast library of plug-ins. Plus the need to change code makes the whole process fun for me.
The take away
Don’t use blogger. Actually i’m kidding about that. More than anything it is to never be afraid to experiment with something. I tried the free version of wordpress before and thought I hated it. This time around I bought my own hosting at bluehost and did the install of wordpress via Fantastico. Now I can’t imagine using anything else. Just goes to show you that first impressions are sometimes misleading–give second chances to things that other people rave about as there is probably a reason for their fanaticism.

A big mistake that a lot of people make is NOT using paid commercial plug-ins and just using free plug-ins for word press. I used the free plug-ins exclusively before but have since changed that by using a combination. It made a big difference for me in 2007. I personally like some of the plug-ins available at: http://www.massautomation.info
